We all know the Toyota Prius in an incredible, fuel-saving vehicle, but Mark Toyota can't exactly imagine it tearing up the race track. It seems as if Toyota can see the Prius on the racetrack, as they're reportedly preparing to race it in Japan's Super GT Series.
The edge-of-your-seat racing series is imposing some new limits on performance this year, and Toyota sees it as the perfect opportunity to shatter the old notion that hybrids are dull and stodgy. We welcome this move too, as it would give the Prius an image that performance enthusiasts may flock to. As for the specifics of the performance limitations; a vehicle can't sport more than 300 horsepower in this year's Super GT Series, which is why Toyota and fellow Japanese automaker, Honda are considering entering hybrid variants in order to address other areas of performance that could be improved upon.
What exactly does the Toyota Prius have to offer? For starters, increased fuel economy, which translates into fewer complications on the track. Furthermore, the vehicle's regenerative braking system and hybrid battery pack are perfect for the creation of a track-ready Kinetic Energy Recovery (KERN) system.
We don't know about you, but Mark Toyota, located in Plover, WI, will be keeping a close eye on the Super GT Series this year. Of course, if you forget, you can always count on us to keep you informed of any critical updates on the vehicle's performance.
