Keeping teen drivers safe behind the wheel is no easy task, but it is one that Toyota has decided to take an attempt at tackling. After all, it seems as though nothing is too big for the Japanese automaker to handle these days. That is why they created the Toyota Teen Driver program, which is dedicated to educating teen drivers by providing them, as well as schools, educators, and parents, with valuable resources.
At Mark Toyota, we think that this is an incredible idea. It shows that Toyota is willing to take responsibility one step further, and it gives parents one more valuable resource to turn to when having to teach their teenager to drive.
Recently, Toyota hosted a competition as a part of the Toyota Teen Driver. The aim of the contest was to find the best drivers education teachers in the country. Dubbed, the Toyota Teen Driver Educators' Challenge, teachers from across the country were invited to submit a 90-minute project-based high-school lesson plan that focuses on driver safety.
After carefully sifting through the submissions, Toyota decided on a Grand Prize winner and First Place winner. In the end, Nick Aprea, Seymour Public Schools, Seymour High School, Seymour, CT walked away with the Grand Prize, while Gina McClarey, Lawrence County Schools, Lawrence County High School, Moulton, AL left with First Prize.
"Toyota is dedicated to saving the lives of teen drivers, and recognizes the critical role that educators and schools can play in their awareness of safe driving behaviors," says Patricia Salas Pineda, Vice President, National Philanthropy, Toyoda, USA Foundation. "With Discovery Education, we congratulate the winners of the Toyota Teen Driver Educators' Challenge and all those who participated for their commitment to safety."1
In winning the Grand Prize, Aprea has won his community access to Toyota Driving Expectations. In this event, participants will be able to go beyond the boundaries of most drivers ed courses. They will be introduced to everyday obstacles, conditions, and distractions that plague drivers every day, but in a safe, controlled driving environment.
As for McClarey; she wins two virtual driving simulators that have been programmed with One Simple Decision, courtesy of Virtual Driver Interactive. Driver Interactive is designed to put an end to impaired and distracted driving by immersing drivers into a first-person experience that focuses on endangering consequences.
