Toyota is staying as innovative as ever with their 'Ideas for Good' campaign. Recently, Toyota asked consumers how they would use any one of five Toyota technologies to create a new innovation outside of the auto industry. The choices for a platform to base the new idea on were the Total Human Model for Safety (T.H.U.M.B.S.), the Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD), the Advanced Parking Assist, the Touch Tracer Display, and the Solar Power Ventilation System.
In November of 2010, Toyota started accepting submissions for the 'Ideas for Good' campaign. From when they started accepting submissions, until the deadline in February, Toyota received 4,000 submissions from fans. With this many entries, Toyota had to make sure to stay as objective as possible, which is why they brought in an independent panel to review them all.
The review panel for Toyota's 'Ideas for Good' campaign included:
- WIRED magazine's Keith Grossman
- Stanford University's Grace Hawthorne
- Fuseproject's Josh Morenstein
- Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center's Joel, Stitzel, Ph.D.
- Popular Science magazine's Jake Ward
After carefully considering each of the entries, the panel decided on five finalists within each category technology. Toyota then proceeded to invite the public to vote online for which submissions they liked the best. And with that, here are the submissions which were most voted for in each category:
- Building a Better Bike Helmet - Using T.H.U.M.B.S. (submitted by Stu S.)
- Pure Air - Using the Solar Powered Ventilation System (submitted by Tim W.)
- Power Plant Gym - Using HSD (submitted by Birken S.)
- Automated Firefighting Extension Ladder Guidance System - Using the Advanced Parking Assist Guidance System (submitted by Fran O.)
- Touch Tracer Mouse, Keyboard and Monitor - Using the Touch Tracer Display (submitted by David C.)
"The caliber of submissions was impressive," said Bill Fay, Group President Marketing, Toyota Motor Sales. "The winning ideas truly re-imagine Toyota technologies in a way that continues to improve quality of life and positively impact the communities in which they might be used..."1
The next step in Toyota's 'Ideas for Good' campaign, and perhaps the most exciting one, is to actually create each of the winning submissions. Toyota plans to do this, in the near future, through the help of a number of key partner organizations.
With the kind of innovation that Toyota displays on a daily basis, is it any wonder why people are so drawn to Toyota's amazing lineup? Vehicle like the Avalon and the Camry are just a few prime examples of Toyota's award-winning innovation. And at Mark Toyota, we invite you to come see them for yourself at 1765 Park Ave Plover, WI 54467.
