In an effort to further the development of in-vehicle interfaces, Toyota and Intel recently signed a memorandum of understanding. This means that they'll partner in the future to create a new infotainment system that offers drivers more of the information they need, while making it easier for them to digest it behind the wheel without having to take their eyes off the road.
While this represents a huge step in the right direction for Toyota, especially with its recent release of the Entune system, the company with the most to gain is actually Intel. The tech giant is a part of the Genivi Alliance, which wishes to create a common infotainment platform for use in all vehicles regardless of automaker. Thus far, Intel has managed to recruit several competing German and South Korean automakers to the cause, and this latest venture with the world's largest automaker could bring them onboard as well.
The biggest part of the partnership between Intel and Toyota is by far the fact that the new system that is to be developed will contain a processor overhead, which allows for easier software upgrades and better performance. Another positive aspect is that the processor overhead would allow the infotainment system to communicate with the vehicle's subsystems, allowing for more relevant information to display to the driver when it's needed.
Of course if all this tech mumbo-jumbo is too hard to follow, Mark Toyota understands. After all, it only takes one seat behind the wheel of a new Toyota to know that you're getting the best deal on the road today.
