Who would ever suspect a bear of stealing a car? No one, that's who. Even the McCarthy family had a hard time believing their eyes as they woke up one night at their Lake Tahoe cabin home to find a black bear rummaging through their 2001 Toyota Prius. Unsure of what else to do, the family retreated into their home and called the police. But, once the authorities showed up on the scene, the car and the bear were long gone.
This is the kind of story that we here at Mark Toyota can find some comedic value. We're especially glad that no one was hurt in this altercation, but there are a few things that we should make clear. First, while the McCarthy's Prius was missing when the police showed up, it wasn't long before the vehicle was recovered... All of 80 feet away. The working theory is that the bear didn't really steal the car, but rather, it accidentally shifted the car into neutral while also releasing the parking brake. This probably sent the bear running away in fear, as the vehicle began rolling away.
We will say, however, that is a sure sign that Mother Nature either really likes or really hates the Prius. On one hand, we can see why the bear would be drawn to its eco-friendly nature and sleek design. However, we also know that the bear may have secretly wanted the family to purchase the upcoming Prius Plug-In Hybrid, or perhaps even just to upgrade their Prius to a newer model.
"The direction-selector gear shift lever had been ripped completely out of the dashboard," Mrs. McCarthy said. "Every recognizable piece of the interior" had been ripped out--although it was undamaged on the outside."1
