Toyota has always been a pioneer in the realm of super fuel-efficient models. The proof: a current portfolio of six hybrid models, including the 2012 Toyota 3rd Gen Prius, 2012 Toyota Prius c, 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, 2012 Toyota Prius v, 2012 Toyota Prius v, 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid and 2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.
Satisfied with their success in the hybrid sector, Toyota is now turning their attention toward another eco-friendly alternative to petrol: fuel-cell technology. Powered by hydrogen, it requires zero gas and produces zero emissions. It's also one of the least-investigated, gas-alternative options out there. Sure, the Big H has one fuel-cell model, which flies largely under consumers' radar. But, most all other automakers don't think fuel-cell technology will be ready to market for at least another 10 years.
Toyota?
Toyota plans to bring their first-ever production fuel-cell model to market in three years. Just three years!
The logic behind this decision is two-fold. One: Toyota wants to diversify their lineup to ultimately give consumers even more eco-friendly options. Two: Come the end of 2015, when Toyota plans to release their all-new, fuel-cell vehicle, there will be nearly 70 hydrogen powering stations in the state of California, where the car is slated to first launch. There's also the fact, Toyota has always been a trendsetter. To take a back seat (pardon the pun) on fuel-cell technology would be completely out of character.
