Toyota and Microsoft recently formed a partnership to develop a gesture-based infotainment system based on the Kinect technology Microsoft developed. The Kinect sensor is used with the popular Xbox 360 as a motion-based gaming peripheral.
The purpose of the system Toyota is developing is to streamline actions such as changing the radio station or lowering the volume as much as possible. Can you imagine being able to change the radio station or skip to a different song with the flick of the wrist? Eliminating all physical controls that can distract drivers from the road is the goal. After all, infotainment systems came about to integrate Smartphone technology to prevent accidents. Why not take it one step further?
These ideas may seem to have popped out of a science fiction movie, but they may soon come to life for the new Toyota lineup that Mark Toyota offers.
To test gesture-based commands, Toyota came up with an electric skateboard that is commanded with simple hand gestures. The car company named it the Board of Awesome, with its navigation powered by a Windows 8 tablet and Kinect sensor.
