If there was ever any doubt that Toyota is the king of hybrid cars, let it be laid to rest now. The Japanese automaker's latest addition to the Prius Family of Cars, the 2012 Toyota Prius c has officially launched in the U.S., and it's leaving the green competition in its dust.

Specifically, the Prius c sold 1,201 units in just three days. By comparison, the Volt sold 1,023 vehicles over the last MONTH. The Leaf? It only sold 478 units last month. That means that the all-new subcompact Toyota sold more than either vehicle did over the course of an entire month, in only three days of being on sale.

The reason behind this? While Mark Toyota could easily point to its solid build quality or the legacy that the Prius brand name has created for itself over the years, we're more inclined to say that a large amount of it comes down to price. Sure the Volt and LEAF boast impressive fuel economy ratings that stack up nicely with the 53 mpg combined rating of the Prius c. But when each vehicle starts at about double the price of the Prius c, it's hard to find any real savings to be had.

Of course, we're also inclined to say that versatile hatchback design of the Prius c doesn't exactly hurt its chances with car buyers either.  Nor does its maneuverable, subcompact design for that matter. In other words, not only does the Prius c pack more miles per gallon at a lower cost, but it also sacrifices little in what makes the subcompact segment so attractive in doing so.
