When two of the industry's most popular automakers team up you're likely to see some great concept cars. Keeping in mind, within the concept cars could potentially be new ideas and/or technologies that actually make it to production. Considering the joint platform architecture, could we see a new type of sports cars? Since the Supra was take off the market Toyota has yet to build a suitable replacement. There may be tons of speculation, but we're hoping the Toyota and BMW's friendship will produce a new Toyota vehicle that will have sports car written all over it.
Looking deeper, there's an effort to develop new lightweight technologies with reinforced composite materials. Those would pair up with a sporty style car nicely and could also be implemented on already popular models, such as the Camry and Avalon.
There are always advantages of this type of match up. With Toyota being the leader in hybrid vehicles, BMW will combine their knowledge as the two look to enhance lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, BMW's mastery of diesel is making great strides in Europe. Toyota will glean some new insights from their Bavarian friend.
As it stand today, fuel cell-technology is quite a hot issue and both automakers are looking for ways to take it up a notch by going all out to build a full fuel-cell vehicle system. The system would target things like the motor, battery and a hydrogen tank. The goal is to complete this endeavor by 2020.
